If you're looking to spend some time outdoors, try one of the following activities to enjoy winter along the South Shore while getting fit!

Cross-Country Skiing

With snow finally hitting the ground, a great way to exercise is by cross-country skiing. Visitors and residents can enjoy cross-country skiing at Hammond's Lost Marsh Golf Course, Lemon Lake County Park in Crown Point, Stoney Run in Leroy, Oak Ridge Prairie in Griffith, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes State Park. Be sure to call ahead to verify that weather conditions permit skiing.

Walk, run or bike the miles of trails

Layer up and enjoy a walk, run or bicycle trip along the more than 125 miles of biking and walking trails in Northwest Indiana. Many of the region's trail systems run along abandoned railroad tracks and highlight the rich ecological diversity that make up the South Shore.

Go sledding

Get a great walk uphill after sledding down the hills of Oak Ridge Prairie in Griffith or at the Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton! Oakridge Prairie does not offer rentals, nor does it allow sleds with wooden or metal runners, The Indiana Dunes State Park is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and provides sledders with the ultimate sledding experience down Devil's Slide.

Watch for seasonal birds

Enjoy fresh air and a nice walk while bird watching along the South Shore. Be sure to visit Whihala Beach in Whiting for a chance to view snowy owls or check out Gibson Woods Nature Preserve to see small songbirds, waterfowl and various raptors.

Play a round of disc golf

Though it may seem like a sunshine activity, a great way to get outside and active during winter is by playing a game of disc golf. Lemon Lake County Park in Crown Point is a 403-acre park, offering guests a 72-hole championship disc golf course.

No matter the weather, stick to your New Year's resolution by getting fit and staying active along the South Shore!
