Heroes to be celebrated at Indiana Welcome Center

The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority will be hosting the special event, Holidays for Heroes. Holidays for Heroes is open to all fire, police, EMS, military and Hoosier Helpers as a thank you for their service and dedication the community and country.

Holiday for Heroes, an appreciation event for our region's heroes, will be held on Thursday, Nov 19 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is open to fire, police, EMS, military and Hoosier Helpers, as well as their families. A private viewing of the "A Christmas Story" Comes Home exhibit is available along with light refreshments and cookies.

Attendees may take a free photo with Santa. Stations for writing letters to Santa or color a picture to military troops overseas will be available. Attendees will also be able to decorate kids' holiday crafts for $1 or cookies for $2.

To participate in the Holiday for Heroes event, please bring your police, fire, EMS, military or Hoosier Helper ID to the Indiana Welcome Center, which is located at the intersection of I-80/94 and Kennedy Avenue South in Hammond.

The "A Christmas Story" Comes Home exhibit, which is presented in agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, will run through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016. The exhibit features six animatronic scenes from the holiday film, "A Christmas Story." A bronze statue of Flick, with his tongue permanently "stuck" to a flagpole can also be viewed outside of the Indiana Welcome Center.
