Great Outdoors

For the outdoor enthusiast, Newton County is home to two fish and wildlife areas, LaSalle and Willow Slough, as well as Kankakee Sands where you can view roaming bison.

While exploring LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area, visitors can watch for wildlife, fish and hunt. Willow Slough provides close to 10,000 acres of land and open water, offering an abundance of activities including camping, wildlife watching, hunting and fishing. Visitors at both areas are allowed to forage for wild blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, walnuts and spring and fall mushrooms.

Kankakee Sands has more than 7,000 acres of land - preserving prairie, savanna and wetlands - as well as hosting an amazing array of birds, wildflowers, plants and animals. With numerous trails, hikers can explore and experience the beauty of nature at Kankakee Sands.
