Wheatfield, Indiana

Wheatfield is the epitome of a small town, where people are friendly, honest and polite. Founded in 1883 on land donated by Simon and Mae Thompson, Wheatfield is located in northern Jasper County. The wild rice that once grew in abundance here was said to look like fields of wheat, one explanation for the town’s name.

Wheatfield is well-known for its annual Sandhill Crane Festival, held each September. This festival features a sizable car show, live entertainment and a wonderful variety of food and craft vendors. It celebrates the sandhill crane’s annual fall migration through the region. The large birds can be seen for many weeks in neighboring farmers’ fields or at the nearby Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area.

Visitors can savor a delightful meal from one of the town’s restaurants, enjoy a game of bowling at the local lanes, or visit Wheatfield’s beautiful library. During the summer, blueberry lovers can pick the fruit to their heart’s delight at one of the local u-pick farms.

Visit Wheatfield's newest venture, JT Shrimp LLC, and bring home some delicious farm-fresh shrimp. Take a tour to learn how this ecologically friendly process of raising shrimp in salt-water pools produces the finest-tasting shrimp around.
