Great Outdoors
Lake County is the all-season playground for lovers of the outdoors. From winter through fall, visitors can take advantage of all that Lake Michigan has to offer, in addition to the area's 11 county parks, majestic sand dunes, farmland, marshes, and more.
Lake County's park system is recognized as one of the premier systems in the nation. With over 5,700 acres, everyone can find something to interest them, whether it be sunbathing at the beach, fishing, hiking and boating in the summer, a hayride in the autumn, or cross country skiing and ice fishing in the winter.
Nature enthusiasts will find Lake County to be a favorite vacation getaway. Waterfowl of all varieties can be found along the Lake Michigan flyways that crisscross the county. High above the ground, in hunting and photography blinds, visitors can view the thousands of ducks and geese that make their way south each fall to the Grand Kankakee Marsh, along the Kankakee River. Southern Lake County offers farmland and forest habitats for whitetail deer and other wildlife.
Maybe you would like to charter a boat and spend the afternoon on Lake Michigan catching Coho Salmon, Brown Trout and the occasional Big King Salmon or Lake Trout. Or, fish from the miles of lakeshore and enjoy the bounty from the area often referred to as the greatest spring fishery in the nation.
