NWI Times - The Indiana Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association will be hosting their 2013 state convention at Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza on April 6 and April 7. The convention will educate massage therapists and body workers on lower back pain and oncology massage, as well as help with business marketing. Both members and non-members are invited to register for classes.

Dr. Joseph Muscolino will lead the 16-hour course for lower pack and pelvis massage. Registration for this course will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6. Dr. Muscolino is the author of numerous books and DVDs and has been a manual and movement therapy educator for 25 years. The course is designed to reach multiple objectives, including teaching attendees how to stretch functional muscles groups of the low back and hip joint, how to explain the physiologic basis for and demonstrate how to perform contract relax and how to explain the fundamental concepts of stretching and apply these concepts to the musculature of the low back, pelvis, and hip joint.

Susan G. Salvo, 30-year massage therapist and author, will lead the 6-hour course on oncology massage. The one-day course will be offered on Saturday, April 6, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Salvo's course will give attendees the tools necessary to create better therapeutic outcomes with providing massage treatment to clients with cancer. The course will also cover topics such as types of cancer, cancer progression, treatment methods, safely and effectively administering massage therapy, and how to modify treatment for clients in hospice care.

On Sunday, April 7, Salvo will lead a workshop on business and marketing, covering skills in both areas that will help get clients through the door and keep the doors open. Topics include websites, search engines, mobile apps, social media and tips on how to invest money and plan for retirement. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.

Dr. Muscolino's course is $249 for members and $300 for non-members. Each of Salvo's courses are $100 for members and $125 for nonmembers.

Lunch will be provided on Sunday, April 7. During the lunch, AMTA will hold their business meeting, awards and elections. Nonmembers are welcome to attend.
