Half Million Mark
Hammond – April 6, 2006 – Mr. Bob Melay of Richfield, OH was honored as the 500,000th visitor to the Indiana Welcome Center. Mr. Melay was presented with a gift basket filled with restaurant, theater, and shopping gift certificates; and a 2-night stay at the newly remodeled Fairfield Inn & Suites in Hammond; along with other “goodies” from the Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau in recognition of the milestone.
The Lake County CVB surprised Melay with the news as he viewed the V-8 Ford Club exhibit in the W.F. Wellman Exhibit Hall. Melay was traveling to Wheaton, IL to visit his son and daughter at Wheaton College. He also stated that he travels past the Welcome Center 5 times a year, and stopped in today to view the current exhibit.
Speros A. Batistatos, President/CEO of the LCCVB acknowledges the importance of the milestone, especially during the increase in traffic and construction on the Borman Expressway, “The Welcome Center continues to serve as a conduit to our hospitality industry and to travelers passing through the area. Our visitor staff is armed to direct travelers into our hotels, restaurants, and attractions and leave travelers with a positive impression of Lake County.”
The Indiana Welcome Center is located on I-80/94 & Kennedy Avenue and opened its doors December 1, 1999.
