Hammond, Ind. (May 13, 2019) – Hundreds of triathletes will descent upon Wolf Lake Memorial Park for the annual Leon’s Triathlon on Sunday, June 2. Leon’s Triathlon, known as “America’s Race,” is a nationally broadcast race. The race steps off at 8:00 a.m. (CST).

Athletes have the opportunity to compete in the Olympic-distance race with a 1,500 meter swim; 23.2 mile bike and 6.2 mile (10K) run. The Sprint course includes a 750 meter swim; 11.6 mile bike and 3.1 mile (5K) run.

Leon’s Triathlon is again partnering with Dare2Tri, a Chicago based no-for-profit, to hosts its annual Injured Military Camp in Hammond, Ind. The camp is open to any injured military or veteran with a physical disability, visual impairment, traumatic brain injury or PTDS. This will be the fourth year Johnel’s Restaurant in Hammond will host approximately 70 vets as well as staff and coaches for a celebratory dinner. “We wanted to thank these vets for their service to our country and celebrate them for their participation in Leon’s Triathlon,” stated Christine Cash, General Manager of Johnel’s Restaurant. The dinner will take place at 7:00 p.m. on June 1.

Leon’s Triathlon was founded in 1983 by Leon Wolek and was held in Hobart, Ind. It soon outgrew the Hobart location and moved to Hammond, Ind. Leon’s Triathlon pioneered the first National Amateur Champion which continues today and hosted one of the first Military Championships in the sport in 1996. Leon’s Triathlon is known as “America’s Race,” because of its dedication to serving those in the armed forces.
