Hammond – March 23, 2006 – The Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau will host the National Lutheran Basketball Tournament this Thursday, March 23rd through Sunday, March 26th at Valparaiso University’s Athletics Recreation Center. More than 60 boys and girls’ middle school and high school teams are expected to participate in the 3 day competition.
The opening ceremonies will take place at The Chapel, located on the University grounds on Thursday. The tournament will begin on Friday and continue until Sunday.
Due to the demand for housing during the tournament, players and guests will stay in Lake and Porter Counties. Lake County expects more than 1,400 hotel reservations and Porter County will have more than 1,000 reservations. The Lutheran Basketball Tournament creates an economic impact of more than $300,000 each year in Northwest Indiana.
Speros A. Batistatos, President/CEO of the Lake County CVB said, “Lutheran Basketball continues to be one of the largest amateur sporting events and we continue to aggressively pursue such events to fill our hotels during the off-season. We are also beginning to form the South Shore Sports Commission to further develop and compete in the growing amateur sports market.”
