The Midwest Clown Association is holding their 42nd Annual Roundup this year at Radisson Hotel in Merrillville, Ind., from Tuesday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 4.

The Midwest Clown Association includes all clowns in the seven-state area of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Three of the local clown organizations in Northwest Indiana will be hosting this convention of clowns, including Calumet Clowns from Hammond, Funnybone Clowns from Crown Point, and Michiana Clowns from Michigan City.

There will be five days of performances, competitions and educational classes in all areas of family-fun entertainment. Several events are in full clown makeup and wardrobe and are open to the public, including the Skit Competition on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. and the "Paradeability" Competition on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 9 a.m.

Classes will cover all levels of clown skills for those who are brand new and would like to give this art form a try through those who are professional family entertainers for many years. The featured performer/lecturer this year is Aurora "Bebop" Krause, from San Antonio, Texas. She is a past president of the World Clown Association, with a long list of performance credentials all over the U.S. and around the world, having performed last year in Kuching, Malaysia, for a humanitarian special event which included dignitaries from all over the Sarawak region.

Calumet Clowns is the local clown group in the Hammond area and surrounding communities as far as Lansing, Ill.; south Chicago, Ill.; and east to Portage, Ind. This clown club has approximately 50 members and has been in existence since 1977. Calumet Clowns is well-known in the region for their help with charity fundraisers and hospital and nursing home visits, as well as many individual members who do birthday parties and corporate events throughout the year. They are seen each year in many local parades and festivals, and teach classes in clown arts once a year for people who are interested in learning to have a great time in this way.
