Merrillville – Beginning July 5th the Merrillville High School will be home to more than 2,000 of the Midwest’s top track and field athletes for the annual Region VI Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Track and Field Championships. The athletes, ages 18 and under from 7 surrounding states will be staying and competing in Northwest Indiana for the 5 day long event. The economic impact of the AAU championship will be approximately $1 million.

“The relationship we have built during the past 10 years with the Amateur Athletic Union has allowed us the opportunity to bring in lucrative track and field events to our community,” said Jason Sands, Director of Sports Development, SSSP. “We look

forward to the continued success of these events.”

The SSSP will inventory Northwest Indiana’s sporting venues, arrange for facility inspections provide publicity and create new events and venues for markets in Lake County and the surrounding region. The SSSP will draw amateur and professional sporting events to Northwest Indiana to increase hotel occupancies.
