Northwest Indiana Unanimously Chosen for 2009 Bowling Tournament
HAMMOND - Still in its infancy stage, South Shore Sports Promotions (SSSP) has landed one its largest tournaments to date. The Northwest Indiana United States Bowling Congress Bowling Association (USBC BA) and SSSP have been awarded the 2009 Indiana USBC BA Men’s State Tournament.
Lake and Porter Counties will be flooded for 12 consecutive weekends (February 20, 2009 through May 16, 2009) with more than 5,000 USBC Men’s bowlers. Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville will host the singles and doubles divisions while Camelot Lanes in Portage will host the team division.
The USBC tournament will bring in 5,000 rooms nights to Lake and Porter Counties with an estimated economic impact of more than $600,000 to the local economy. “This is another example of how selling Northwest Indiana as a region has broadened the scope and magnitude of events that South Shore Sports Promotions can go after,” Speros A. Batistatos, President/CEO, LCCVB stated.
Northwest Indiana was unanimously chosen to host the tournament by the Indiana State USBC BA delegates at their annual conference in January. “There were a number of factors that went into the choice, including hotels, bowling facilities and the housing management service Lake County brought to the table,” said Gene Skalba, Association Manager for the Northwest Indiana USBC BA.
The last time Northwest Indiana hosted a state USBC tournament was 1958. Bill Morton, President of the Northwest Indiana USBC BA said after hearing the announcement, “It’s about time.” He continued to say, “We’ve been supporting the tournament for years and were about to give up until South Shore Sports Promotions made their presentation. Jason Sands [Director of Sports Development] was instrumental in bringing the tournament back after 51 years.” Paul Miller, President of the Indiana State USBC BA, followed up with, “This was a long time coming. The state association is looking forward to visiting Northwest Indiana.”
