More than 1 million Wall Street Journal subscribers got a taste of pierogies as coverage from this year's annual Pierogi Fest® hit the front page of today's newspaper.

"It's really remarkable for a festival to be covered by the Wall Street Journal, let alone make the front page. Obviously, we are humbled by the coverage and the attention that article brings to a great event organized by so many hard working volunteers," said Tom Dabertin, chairman of Pierogi Fest®.

Festival planners estimate more than 300,000 attendees experienced the wacky event, which was hosted July 24-26 in downtown Whiting and featured more than 75 food vendors, approximately 20 of which served pierogies, 100 arts and crafts booths, 25 specialty vendors, and a massive beer garden. Entertainment during the festival included the International Pierogi Parade, a pierogi toss and a pierogi eating contest.

"The Pierogi Fest® has long been a summer staple along the South Shore," said Speros A. Batistatos, president and CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority. "Front page coverage in a publication like the Wall Street Journal expands our destination's reach, showing the international newspaper's subscribers that Northwest Indiana offers top-notch cultural festivals and events."

Pierogi Fest® has been named as one of the wackiest festivals on the planet, and has also been named by Oprah Winfrey as one of her favorite things to do for five years straight; named as The Times of Northwest Indiana's Best Festival for ten consecutive years; a Blue Ribbon Festival of Summer in 2013 by; featured on The Food Channel, Travel Channel, television stations throughout the United States, CNN, and television stations in Germany, Slovakia, Poland, China and Australia.

"The Wall Street Journal article demonstrates that there is so much to offer in Northwest Indiana; it's a jewel that is being discovered, and we are proud that the success of Pierogi Fest® is helping to draw people to see what the South Shore has to offer," stated Dabertin.
