Reaching for the Stars “A Tribute to Space Pioneers” Exhibit

Hammond Reaching for the Stars “A Tribute to Space Pioneers” opens at the Indiana Welcome Center located at I-80/94 and Kennedy Avenue. The exhibit highlights many aspects of the space program and pays tribute to those astronauts on the Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia; who gave their lives for the pursuit of new discoveries.

Highlights of the exhibit include a 4,000 square foot full-scale walk through mock-up of the U.S. Destiny laboratories. The lab teaches the challenges of conducting space research and illustrates the sophisticated hardware used in orbit. Also on exhibit are an Apollo spacesuit, photo displays, moon rock replicas and the award-winning Purdue Moon Buggy. Hands-on activities include viewing stars, using telescopes to view solar sightings and operating Lego-Dacta Mars Rovers over a simulated Martian terrain.

Reaching for the Stars “A Tribute to Space Pioneers” will be on display in the W.F. Wellman Exhibit Hall from September 1st through November 12th during normal business hours. The exhibit is presented by The Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana and the Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
