From one of the most memorable scenes in the holiday classic "A Christmas Story," the Oh Fuuudge! Relay Race pays tribute to the events leading up to Ralphie blurting out "the-queen-mother-of-dirty-words." Join the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority as it hosts the event on Saturday, Dec. 13, with registration starting at 10:00 a.m.
Teams of one parent and one child will compete to see who can change a tire and maneuver through an obstacle course the quickest. The parent will be responsible for removing the tire and placing the lug nuts in a hub cap. Once all lug nuts are removed and the tire is placed on the ground, the child will attempt to hold the hub cap steady and keep all lug nuts in place as they work their way through the obstacle course. When the child returns with the hub cap, the parent will replace the tire, fasten the lug nuts and both will return to the truck.
There are two age categories to enter, with the category being based on the age of the child: ages 4 to 7 or 8 to 12. Entry fee for the race is non-perishable and canned goods to be donated to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. The team with the best time in each age category will be awarded a prize for both the child and the adult. All past winners are ineligible to win contests. The Oh Fuuudge! Relay Race is part of the "A Christmas Story" Comes Home exhibit, which is presented in agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 4, 2015, in the W.F. Wellman Exhibit Hall at the Indiana Welcome Center. The design takes visitors to the streets of downtown Hohman, a fictional Indiana town which was a disguise for Hammond.
