South Shore Sports Legends Exhibit Dates Announced

HAMMOND – South Shore Sports Legends will be recognized and honored August 16 – November 9 at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond. Legends will include athletes, teams, organizations, coaches and others that have contributed significantly to sports along the South Shore. Fifty (50) sports legends will be revered in the W.F. Wellman Exhibit Hall with photos and stories of their accomplishments and talents during their sports career.

South Shore Sports Legends committee members, led by Honorary Chairman, W.F. “Bill” Wellmen, will select 50 sports legends from a pool of nearly 250 suggestions and entries. Entries are open to the public until March 31st. Forms are available to the public at Legends will be announced at the opening of the exhibit on Thursday, August 16th.

Committee Co--Chairman, John Friend, Interim Athletic Director at Purdue University Calumet is leading the selection committee. “Many fine athletes, coaches, teams and contributors call this area home and we want to recognize their contribution to sports in Northwest Indiana. It will be difficult to limit outstanding contributors to 50 from the names submitted to us”, said John.

“Athletes like Tony Zale from Gary and LaTaunya Pollard from East Chicago have elevated the image of our area. We are proud to recognize them and hope to continue to honor athletes and other outstanding alumni of Lake County thus furthering the image and identity of Lake County and the entire South Shore”, said Speros A. Batistatos, President/CEO of the Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The South Shore Sports Legends exhibit current sponsors include South Shore Sports Promotions, NIPSCO and Omni 41. Sponsorships begin at $500.
