Bead Town: Along the South Shore
April 17-September 30, 2018
Re-opening February 2019
Indiana Welcome Center
7770 Corinne Dr., Hammond, Ind.
Bead Town: Along the South Shore will highlight iconic buildings, historic places, landscapes and people along the southern shores of Lake Michigan. The mural will also feature real people from around the globe making it an international work of art.
The mural will feature Chicago’s major skyscrapers by night and South Shore Indiana’s iconic buildings by day. The project will take two years to complete and is the latest attempt to set a Guinness World Records™ for the largest bead mosaic.
Visitors can participate in free workshops; see the mural on the road or sign up for a “make and take” workshop like Bead and Brew. See dates below.
Bead Town’s mural “Life in the French Quarter” will also be on display at the Indiana Welcome Center. “Life in the French Quarter” is the current Guinness World Records™ achievement for the largest mosaic made out of beads. The artwork is 96 ft. long and 8 ft. tall.
The mural was unveiled in May of 2017 in Gary, Indiana and celebrates New Orleans’ 300 year history. It features Joan of Arc at the New Orleans parade and many celebrities that made New Orleans their home. “Life in the French Quarter” is sponsored by the Hotel Monteleone, The New Orleans Advocate, IN Heath Integrated Care and the University of Chicago.
