July 14th-21st was Fair Week in Jasper and Newton Counties. My family and I took it as a sign that we should go to both fairs and compare them. We found an interesting contrast in county personalities and left with the impression that both fairs offer different but equally enjoyable experiences.
One of the best things about summer in the South Shore? Festivals! Plenty of food – from BBQ and gyros to funnel cakes and cotton candy and don’t forget about kids activities like parades, face painting and carnival rides. It seems that you can’t have a festival without amazing live entertainment!

If you’re looking for a hidden gem in Northwest Indiana or if you’re a history buff you may want to visit the Century of Progress Homes at the Indiana Dunes National Park. These five homes were originally built for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, showing off the modern architectural design of the time. The homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and once a year there is a ranger-led tour of the five homes.
