November 18, 2017

7-85 N Lake St
Gary, IN 46403

Enjoy an exciting and informative hike at one of the most historically and ecologically interesting spots in our region. This hike, led by Mario Longoni of the Field Museum, will start at the Paul H Douglas Center for Environmental Education and lead us through portions of Marquette Park Gary and Miller Woods.

We will learn about the industrial history and the diverse communities that continue to transform the landscape of the Calumet Region. Learn about the effort to create a Calumet Heritage Effort. Please join us.

Location: Park and begin at the Paul H. Douglas Environmental Education Center. The hike will cover roughly a 4-5 mile loop to the beach and back. Pass through beautiful dune and swale landscape, the headwaters of the Grand Calumet Waterway, Miller Beach and historic Aquatorium and Marquette Park Pavilion. From there, it’s possible to shuttle cars or walk one mile back to the starting point.

Directions: Heading east from the northern terminus of I-65 along Highway 12, turn left onto Lake Street. Follow Lake Street until you see a pedestrian bridge and the Paul H. Douglas Center parking area.

Dress for the weather. For day of questions, contact Mario Longoni at 773-301- 8234. RSVP encouraged at
