East Chicago Monarch Festival

September 21, 2019

5100 Indianapolis Blvd.
East Chicago, IN 46312

The East Chicago Monarch Festival celebrates the monarch butterfly’s life cycle and migration to Mexico through dance, arts, music, food, games, educational exhibits and demonstrations, including the tagging and releasing of monarch butterflies. As the butterflies fly more than 2,000 miles to their wintering grounds, their increased presence is noticed by area residents, some of whom believe them to be the returning souls of their ancestors. Partners include The Nature Conservancy in Indiana (organizer), the City of East Chicago, Shirley Heinze Land Trust, Save the Dunes, The Field Museum, Audubon Great Lakes and the U.S. Forest Service.
