7-85 N Lake St
Gary, IN 46403
- Recurrence: Recurring weekly on Sunday
- Time: 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM
Join a ranger for a hike through Indiana Dunes National Park's exceptional Miller Woods, starting from the Paul H. Douglas Center. The hike is spectacular in its varied habitats including globally rare black oak savanna, interdunal ponds, wetlands, and towering sand dunes which offer incredible views of Lake Michigan and Chicago. Hike lengths can vary from a half-mile to just over three miles. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring water, and insect repellent during the warmer seasons.
Please note: Due to recent legislation on February 15, 2019, the Miller Woods Trail has been renamed as the Paul H. Douglas Trail. Next season this event will be renamed to reflect the renaming of the trail. The reason for the renaming is to honor Paul H. Douglas, a late Illinois Senator who helped lead the fight along with Save the Dunes and other citizen groups to create the national lakeshore in 1966.
The Paul H Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12.
