He was cited for meritorious service at Stones River, Tenn. on Dec. 31, 1862.Ignoring fire from Confederate forces during the battle of Stones River, Tenn., Chaplain John Whitehead saved Col. I.C.B. Surnan, who later testified on behalf of Whitehead receiving the Medal of Honor.
