Religious Attractions

The South Shore has several attractions of spiritual significance that draw people of all religious faiths from around the country.

The Shrine of Christ's Passion is an interactive half-mile winding pathway that begins with the Last Supper and Garden of Gethsemane.   The pathway was created to provide a prayerful environment where all people can open their hearts to the journey of Christ's Passion and draw closer to the Lord.  You then journey through the Passion of Christ as depicted in the Stations of the Cross.  The journey consists of 40 life size bronze sculptures each with a listening station.  At the end of the trip you can stop by the visitor's center which is home to a one-of-a-kind religious store that offers visitors a wide variety of inspirational gifts and books for people of all faiths.

The Carmelite Shrine in Munster is truly a site to behold.  In the 12 Shrines you will find samples of God-created beauty collected from all parts of the world in the form of crystals and colorful rocks, some of which come alive upon being exposed to ultraviolet rays.  Also visit the monastery and chapel of Carmelite Order of monks which contains many works of religious art.

Size and beauty are just some of the things that make the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral so special.  The only Greek Orthodox Cathedral in the state of Indiana, this structure features 20 stained glass windows.  Learn the theological meaning of the cathedral's iconography and architecture.

Tour the largest collegiate chapel in the country.  The Chapel of the Resurrection is located on the Valparaiso University campus.  The chapel was constructed in 1959 at the cost of $7.5 million.  Adjacent to the chapel, rising 140 fee into the sky is the free standing Brandt Campanile that houses 12 bronze bells, the largest of which weighs over 17,000 pounds.

Thousands travel to northwest Indiana each year to see Jesus of Nazareth:  The Passion Play.  A volunteer cast of hundreds tells the story of the passion of Jesus Christ each Lenten season.  Each year new scenes are added, new effects are inserted, and new characterizations are invented making it a different experience for the viewer year after year.
