Bicycling Information

What better way to spend a day at the dunes than riding your bike. Whether you ride from your house or pack up your bike and drive to the lakeshore, you're sure to have a fun day. As you plan your bike trip remember to bring a few simple things:

• Your bike
• Plenty of drinking water
• A way to lock your bike
• Some snacks
• Your personal first aid kit
• An I.D.
• Lots of time

Bicycles are permitted on the main roads, the Long Lake Trail between Long Lake parking lot and Ogden Dunes, and the Lake Michigan shore line from Lake Front Drive to Central Beach Access Point. Bicycles are not allowed off-trail or on sand dunes.

There are two bike trails within the park:

Calumet Bike Trail (maintained by Porter County Parks Department) a 10-mile off-road trail that runs from Highway 12 near Mt. Baldy to the Cowles Bog parking area at Mineral Springs Road. The trail is flat with a surface of packed crushed limestone. There is parking available at most road crossings for this trail.

Marquette Trail (maintained by the national lakeshore) a multi-use trail that runs about 2 miles from County Line road at West Beach on the east and Grand Boulevard on the west. Parking is available next to the national lakeshore's maintenance facility (look for the trail parking sign near the bridge on County Line road). The trail is flat with a surface of packed crushed limestone.

Oak Savannah Trail (maintained by the national lakeshore) is a 1.5 mile long paved trail that is great for biking, pushing a stroller, or just walking to relax and improve your health. It is one of five trails in the national lakeshore that is part of the Park Prescription Program. Doctors, working with park staff, identified trails and activities that were appropriate as therapy for their patients. Check with your health care provider to see if they will write you a prescription to get some exercise on a park trail.

LaPorte and Porter Counties both have several bike routes for you to enjoy outside of your National Park. Porter County's Duneland Loop uses the Calumet Trail between 500 east and Kemil roads.
