Indiana Dunes Horseback Riding

Please note: The Glenwood Dunes Trail system at Indiana Dunes National Park has been temporarily closed due to extensive flooding to protect both park resources and the public’s safety. The flooding, up to three feet deep in some sections, is a hazard to both hikers and equestrian users of the trail. The recent heavy rains, and possibly beaver activity, may be the cause of the flooding. Park staff is surveying the trail to determine what can be done to mitigate the problem. The closure is limited to 30 days and will be shortened if the flooding subsides sooner.

Bring your horse to the Indiana Dunes National Park and spend a relaxing day meandering through forested dune ridges, prairies and wetlands on the 6.4-mile Glenwood Dunes Trail. This moderate trail has two trail heads and a series of loops. The linear Glenwood Dunes extension will add 1.2 miles.

The trail is open to horseback riders from March 16 through December 14 and is accessible from its own parking lot at the corner of U.S. Highway 20 and Brummitt Road in Chesterton. The area opens daily at 7:00 a.m. and closes 30 minutes past sunset.
