Deniece Williams South Shore Legend

Deniece Williams

Singer, Songwriter & Producer

Deniece Williams, a proud native of Gary, Indiana, has become one of music’s most radiant and influential voices. A 4-time Grammy Award winner and 15-time nominee, her legendary career spans five decades and multiple genres (R&B, Pop, and Gospel), each marked by her unmistakable four-octave range and uplifting spirit. Rooted in the soul and determination of her hometown, Williams’ journey from Gary’s neighborhoods to global stardom stands as a testament to faith, perseverance, and purpose.

Williams worked as a nurse and telephone operator while singing part-time in Chicago, where her powerful voice eventually led her to the world stage. Starting as a background vocalist for Stevie Wonder’s Wonderlove, she later signed with Columbia Records and released her debut album, “This Is Niecy.” It's hit “Free” became an anthem of self-expression, followed by classics like “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” and “Black Butterfly.” Her music reflects a blend of positivity and emotional depth, inspiring new generations.

Equally celebrated in Gospel music, Williams earned four Grammy Awards for songs that speak to faith and empowerment, including “I Surrender All” and “I Believe in You.” Her influence, spanning radio, stage, and screen, has made her a timeless icon whose artistry transcends borders and genres. Through it all, Deniece Williams remains deeply connected to her roots, embodying the spirit of Gary, Indiana—resilient, soulful, and unstoppable. “Gary is where I learned to dream,” she says. “Everything I became started right here.”

A mural honoring Deniece Williams was unveiled at the corner of 25th Avenue and Broadway in Gary, Indiana, in late August 2025, created by artist Max Sansing as part of the city's cultural revival to celebrate local icons.
