As President and CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority and a lifelong resident of Lake County, I have witnessed firsthand the remarkable progress of Northwest Indiana. Located at the crossroads of America, our region is emerging as a key driver of innovation and growth—not only for Lake County but for the entire state of Indiana.

The economic trajectory of our region is clear: Northwest Indiana is poised to be a leader in job creation, tourism, and business development. With our strategic location near Chicago, robust infrastructure, and a talented, diverse workforce, we are well-positioned to attract businesses and tourists alike.

In 2022, Lake County ranked second in Indiana for visitor spending, attracting an impressive $1.2 billion. This influx of tourism not only enriches our local businesses but also has generated $131 million in tax revenue, which are dollars that help supplement the budgets of cities and towns, underscoring the vital role that tourism plays in our economy.

With a total impact of $848 million from tourism, it’s evident our region is a destination worth investing in and has more room for growth.  To fully realize this potential, we must invest in new opportunities that will prepare us for increased success. This is why the proposed Lake County Convention Center project is critical for our future.

First, consider the gap left by the closure of the Radisson Hotel and Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville. Before its closure, this facility was the primary convention venue in Lake County, generating approximately $6 million annually from meetings and events. The absence of this venue has adversely affected many businesses, particularly in the hospitality industry, which suffer from the loss of event-driven opportunities.

Filling this void is not just about regaining lost revenue; it is also about creating a modern, state-of-the-art facility that can meet the growing demand for convention and event space, which is vital for thriving areas. This investment will enhance economic activity within the region rather than losing potential events to venues in Chicago or other neighboring areas.

It is essential to highlight the significant economic benefits and potential for regional growth that this new convention center could provide. A market study conducted by Johnson Consulting and commissioned by the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority indicates that by year ten, a convention center could generate approximately $74 million in total economic impact, $25.2 million in increased earnings, and $4.1 million in tax revenues from sales tax, county income tax (CIT), and local income tax (LIT).

These figures are not merely theoretical; they are derived from comparable convention centers and locations similar to Northwest Indiana. During construction, this project would generate 900 construction jobs, positively impacting many families in Lake County. Upon completion, it is estimated that this project will add more than 722 full-time jobs in the hospitality industry, which is particularly attractive to the younger generation.

The market study also shows that the demand for large event spaces in the region is supported by both proximity to Chicago and projected growth spurred by other major infrastructure developments currently underway. The billion-dollar investment into the double-tracking of the South Shore Line and the West Lake Corridor expansion project has positioned us to tap more effectively into the third-largest economy in the nation, Chicago. This project is designed to increase accessibility and enhance attractiveness for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

It is important to address not only the economic benefits of this potential project but also the broader strategic importance of this development for the future of Northwest Indiana. Beyond the direct financial impact, a convention center would serve as a symbol of the region’s revitalization and growth. The convention center project will enhance Lake County’s role as an economic engine for all of Northwest Indiana, providing essential infrastructure that complements ongoing regional developments and further stimulates our local tourism, retail, and hospitality industries.

Convention centers often act as catalysts for growth, drawing conferences, trade shows, concerts, and other events that bring people—and their spending power—into local communities. Adding this piece to Lake County’s economic profile enhances our reputation as a destination for tourists across the country.

Momentum is already building in Lake County and Northwest Indiana.  This convention center isn’t just a local initiative, it’s a regional and state priority.  The Indiana General Assembly has committed up to $5 million annually in matching funds for the next 20 years, showing the state’s clear belief in the long-term value this facility will deliver.  By investing in tourism and event infrastructure, Northwest Indiana has a prime opportunity to position itself as a powerhouse in the Midwest.

Only a concept and vision for more than two decades, this convention center project is now positioned for success.  We have a rare and urgent chance to turn this vision into reality.  If we fail to act now, we face another twenty years of stagnation in the convention center market while other regions with more foresight pull ahead.

We can’t let this moment slip away.  This is our moment to act – to invest in our future and secure the success of our communities for generations to come.
