Crown Point, Indiana
Incorporated in 1868, Crown Point is the county seat of Lake County. This beautiful city not only has a wealth of fascinating history but also has an abundance of dining, entertainment and recreational options.
Crown Point features a large variety of distinctive restaurants and two breweries. Crown Brewing serves up award-winning craft beer that you can enjoy with casual fare from the adjoining Carriage Court Pizza. Off Square Brewing features a wide range of dining options along with their brews. Both are featured on the South Shore Brewery Trail. There's also Manic Meadery which crafts small-batch mead (honey wine), traditional wine and cider.
The downtown square offers many unique shops and restaurants. In the center is the Historic Lake County Courthouse, also called the "Grand Old Lady," which was erected in 1878. It was once known as the "Marriage Mill" since Crown Point required no waiting period for marriage licenses. Many notable people, including Rudolph Valentino and Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), were married there. Besides shops, the courthouse also is home to the Lake County Historical Society Museum, a restaurant, service businesses and a ballroom.
The city is also is home to the Lake County Fairgrounds, where the Lake County Fair is held each August. Downtown Crown Point hosts many fun-filled festivals and events as well including the Taste of Crown Point, St. Patrick's Day nighttime parade, Corn Roast and Oktoberfest. A weekly car cruise and farmers' market are favorites during the summer.
Visitors can take part in many outdoor activities, such as golfing at the White Hawk Country Club or the Oak Knoll Golf Club, disc golfing at the championship courses in Lemon Lake County Park or biking along the Erie Lackawanna trail.
