East Chicago was founded heavily on industry and heritage. In the 1930's and 40's there were 57 different nationalities residing in the city. Today, visitors will find the city to be engulfed in a rich Hispanic heritage.

The city was once referred to as the "Twin Cities" because a shipping canal divided the city into two independent sections, Indiana Harbor and East Chicago.
