Cultural & Historic Attractions
Step into the past when you visit the many historic attractions throughout the South Shore. Buckley Homestead, Chellberg Farm, Bailly Homestead and Barker Mansion are all long-standing homes that give visitors a view into the region's history.
Wander to downtown Crown Point where you will find the historic Crown Point Courthouse. Just off the square sits the Old Sheriff's House, made famous for being the jail that Dillinger escaped from.
Stop by the Aquatorium at Marquette Park in Gary to view the history of the area's Tuskegee Airmen and Octave Chanute, the grandfather of flight.
Explore the South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail and learn about the brave soldiers who fought for our freedom. The trail serves as a guide for visitors who want to learn more about and pay respect to their veterans. Included in the trail is the Memorial Opera House, built in 1893 by a local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic.
