Morocco, Indiana

Morocco was established in 1851 by John Murphey, making it the first town in Newton County. Morocco has a wealth of history associated with it: Beaver Lake, the largest lake in Indiana prior to being drained in the 1870s; the Scott-Lucas House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places; Efroymson Restoration at Kankakee Sands, a project that is restoring the wetlands that existed centuries ago; and birthplace of Baseball Hall of Fame, legend Sam Rice, 19-year outfielder for the Washington Senators and player for the Cleveland Indians. 

Morocco is a nature-lover's paradise. Visit Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area to enjoy hunting, fishing, wildlife watching and camping. Enjoy gathering wild blackberries, blueberries and raspberries, walnuts, as well as spring and fall mushrooms.

The more than 7,000-acre Kankakee Sands is an exceptional place to enjoy nature. Spend the day roaming the trails, viewing the crumbling foundations of a town that was once known as Conrad, birding for rare and threatened species or volunteering at the Native Plant Nursery.

Enjoy exciting drag racing at the U.S. 41 No Limit Raceway quarter-mile drag strip. Check out the Antique Snowmobile Museum, Indiana's only museum dedicated to vintage and antique snowmobiles, or learn about the history of the Morocco area at Beaver Lake Museum and Two Rivers Reference Library. Attend the Morocco Homecoming and enjoy a parade, fireworks, 5k and 10k races, a historical tour, food and entertainment.
