See More: Things To Do

Along Lake Michigan

Visitors to Northwest Indiana come away impressed with the majesty of Lake Michigan. A sprawling waterfront of activity and beauty, there are so many things to do and sights to see along Lake Michigan, it's hard to know where to start.

You can hike and climb the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which stretches 25 miles east from Gary, Indiana, along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Featuring sand dunes, wetlands, bogs, and prairie areas, the Indiana Dunes offer a unique experience for young and old.

Indiana Dunes camping is also exceedingly popular, with campers pitching tents and renting cabins near the beach, spending their days fishing along the shore of Lake Michigan, or hiking the sandy dunes. For those interested in indoor accommodations, there is a great selection of South Shore hotels to meet any budget.

Traveling the towns throughout the South Shore will reward you with everything from shopping destinations, to world-class golf courses, to family-friendly attractions and casinos. The cities and towns along Lake Michigan are always bustling with activity.

Fishing on Lake Michigan is also quite a treat, as anglers can take fishing charters onto the water in the hopes of catching lake trout, steelhead trout, chinook salmon and more.

Lake Michigan is also popular among boaters and sailors, with thousands of visitors every year taking their motorboats, canoes and sailboats out on the lake for water adventures. The South Shore area of Lake Michigan offers a number of harbors for boat entry: Hammond Marina, East Chicago Marina and a number of others in Michigan City and Portage.
