Rensselaer, Indiana

Originally platted in 1839 and named Newton, the town's name was changed to Rensselaer in 1844 after James Van Rensselaer, a merchant from New York, took over the land from Joseph D. Yeoman.

Rensselaer has all the charm of small-town living, with the conveniences of a larger city.

As the Jasper County seat, Rensselaer boasts a beautiful historic courthouse at the center of the town. The courthouse, which was built in 1898, is surrounded by quaint shops and restaurants. Shop at unique stores such as Long's Gifts and The Willow Switch.  City Office and Pub is a local favorite for great pub food and Clauss Bakery and Café is a popular destination for delicious donuts or hearty lunch fare. Busy Bee Freeze, open during the warmer months, is a great place to get yummy ice cream treats.

In the warmer months, the courthouse grounds are the site of the semi-weekly farmers market and the Little Cousin Jasper Festival. Rensselaer also hosts a popular cruise night and is home to the annual Jasper County Fair.

Additionally, Rensselaer has two movie theaters, a bowling alley, a town pool and several parks.

Rensselaer not only offers many shopping, dining and entertainment options, but the town has beautiful and historic architectural features as well, from the downtown storefronts to the neighboring homes.

Visitors can stay at a bed and breakfast in one of those historic homes, The White House on Park Avenue, or stay at a modern hotel, such as the Holiday Inn Express Rensselaer.

There is plenty to experience in this charming town.
