The National Park Service has been working diligently to make the Dunes beaches and surrounding areas family friendly. One of the most popular beach spots, Mount Baldy, reopened on July 14, 2017. This living dune has been closed since 2013 after hazards were discovered and after extensive testing, the beach has been deemed safe and the trail will reopen later in 2017.
Lifeguard staff has been expanded this year and allows for swimming seven days a week on both eastern and western portions of the beach.
Beach Fun Fridays will take place at West Beach. Park staff will be available on Fridays at 2:00 p.m. to assist with kayaks and paddleboards in Lake Michigan. After sunset, you can enjoy gathering around the campfire to toast marshmallows. Beach Fun Fridays will run from June 16 to Sept 1, 2017.
Additional events, hikes and stargazing programs are held throughout the year. Learn more online on our Indiana Dunes events page or call 219-395-1882 for details.
