Merrillville, Indiana

The 31 square miles that encompass the town of Merrillville were once densely covered with forest and inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians. Originally known as McGwinn Village, the town went through several name changes before it was named Merrillville, after brothers Dudley and William Merrill. In 1971, it officially became a town under Indiana law.

Merrillville offers visitors a wide variety of shopping, dining and entertainment options.

In the summer on US Route 30, Deep River Waterpark offers "splashtastic" family fun, and in the winter, has ice skating and special events. Right next to Deep River, climb and zip through the trees at Edge Adventures.

Also on US 30, stock up on snacks at Albanese Candy Factory and ChicagoLand Popcorn, right across the street from each other. There's also Cute as a Cupcake Cupcakery and Bake Shop you can try for sweet treats.

For an educational adventure, visit the Merrillville-Ross Township Historical Museum or view a public show at the Merrillville Community Planetarium.

Golfers can hit the links in the spring through fall at Turkey Creek Golf Course, part of the Lake County Parks system.
