Outdoor time doesn’t have to mean boots and trail maps. In the South Shore, the good stuff’s often just off the beaten path—llama treks, train rides, wildlife encounters and even a little historical roleplay. Skip the usual drive-around routine and try something with a little more edge (geocaching, anyone?). Then cap it off with a solid meal at one of the many restaurants nearby.
Llama Treks at Moon-Shine on Coffee Creek Farm
Just a few miles from the Indiana Dunes in Chesterton, Moon-Shine on Coffee Creek Farm attraction and vacation rental offers guided treks where you lead a llama (yes, a llama!) through scenic trails on the property. The llamas are friendly, surprisingly calm and each one has its own personality. You’ll spend about an hour walking, snapping photos and learning how they’re raised and cared for. Afterward, you can hang out at the farm or stick around for lunch if you book the “Lunch with a Llama” tour. Call 219-741-6611 or 708-846-0673 to schedule.
Wildlife Adventure at Sandy Oak Ranch
If a drive-thru safari sounds too good to be true, think again. At Sandy Oak Ranch in Lake Village, you can stay in your car and cruise past bison, elk, camels and other animals that roam the property. There’s also a walk-through area with goats, donkeys and more animals that love the attention, and if you book the Baby Ranch Adventure, you’ll get the chance to bottle feed an adorable baby. It’s a great way to see wildlife without heading to a crowded zoo.
Geocaching at Indiana Dunes National Park
If you crave adventure, geocaching at the Indiana Dunes might be your next favorite hobby. It’s a real-life treasure hunt using GPS to track down hidden caches scattered throughout the park! Part hiking, part puzzle, all you need is your phone, a good pair of shoes and maybe a few snacks. It’s a fun way to see the park and find places you wouldn’t have stumbled on otherwise.
Historical Reenactments at Buckley Homestead

Throughout the year, the park hosts reenactments of Civil War skirmishes and live demonstrations of everything from blacksmithing to butter churning. You can tour period-style buildings, working farms, gardens and even a 1900s schoolhouse. It’s as educational as it is exciting. Keep an eye on their events calendar which includes sheep shearing days, night-time hikes, and the annual Homestead Fall Festival.
